Mid Term

Title: WALKING

Author: Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Thesis: wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization.

Do you think the introduction was effective? Why? Yes the introduction was effective, because it got straight to the point.

What technique did the author use to conclude the essay? I DON'T KNOW

Discuss the conclusion: The days are sweet and the nights are young. Everyone is waiting for this day to come, when the air is fresh and the sun is shinning so bright. Everybody wants to reach the holy land. A place where there are no crimes a peaceful pace. I would love to go to that place too. So we saunter toward the Holy Land, till one day the sun shall shine more brightly than ever he has done, shall perchance shine into our minds and hearts, and light up our whole lives with a great awakening light, as warm and serene and golden as on a bank-side in autumn.
Title:GIFTS

Author: Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thesis: IT is said that the world is in a state of bankruptcy, that the world owes the world more than the world can pay, and ought to go into chancery, and be sold.

Do you think the introduction was effective? Why? Yes the introduction was effective, because it got straight to the point.

What technique did the author use to conclude the essay? I DON'T KNOW

Discuss the conclusion: I believe the author has a point. The world we live in is full of greed. A take and take situations. The world we live in is a gift from God, but we as people have taking that gift for granted. We disrespect our atmosphere, we cut down all the trees. I fear to breathe any treason against the majesty of love, which is the genius and god of gifts, and to whom we must not affect to prescribe. Let him give kingdoms or flower-leaves indifferently. There are persons from whom we always expect fairy-tokens; let us not cease to expect them. This is prerogative, and not to be limited by our municipal rules. For the rest, I like to see that we cannot be bought and sold. The best of hospitality and of generosity is also not in the will, but in fate. I find that I am not much to you; you do not need me; you do not feel me; then am I thrust out of doors, though you proffer me house and lands. No services are of any value, but only likeness. When I have attempted to join myself to others by services, it proved an intellectual trick,—no more. They eat your service like apples, and leave you out. But love them, and they feel you, and delight in you all the time.

Mid-Term Assignment

Title: The Mutability of Literature

Author: Washington Irving

The approach: I DON'T KNOW

Thesis: There are certain half-dreaming moods of mind, in which we naturally steal away from noise and glare, and seek some quiet haunt, where we may indulge our reveries and build our air castles undisturbed.

Do you think the introduction was effective? Why? Yes the introduction was effective, because it got straight to the point.

What technique did the author use to conclude the essay? I DONT KNOW

Discuss the conclusion: I was just about to launch forth into eulogiums upon the poets of the day, when the sudden opening of the door caused me to turn my head. It was the verger, who came to inform me that it was time to close the library. I sought to have a parting word with the quarto, but the worthy little tome was silent; the clasps were closed: and it looked perfectly unconscious of all that had passed. I have been to the library two or three times since, and have endeavored to draw it into further conversation, but in vain; and whether all this rambling colloquy actually took place, or whether it was another of those odd day-dreams to which I am subject, I have never to this moment been able to discover.

The 2008 Elections

Today was the day for our country to decide on who would want to be our next president, and what propositions we as the U.S. citizens want to pass. This election made history, because this is the first time we ever had a black person and a female run as president. This elections also dealt with some real sensitive propositions. For the last few months, things have gotten really interesting and now we are here today. Obama and McCain our are final candidates. A lot of voters do not want to see a republican be reelected into office again, because of all the trouble and problems Bush has brought into office. Now here sit and wait, as the numbers rise, as the votes are counted, anticipation is killing everyone. The scariest part about this day is if Obama does become President, it will bring out a lot of racist people and scary things will probably begin to happen, like: Assassination of Obama, burnings of crosses, police brutality, hatred, and nasty words and comments be used, and so on. What ever is the outcome I hope its for the best and not for the worst, because it's time for change, it's time to see a new leader, leading this country. Hopefully the new president can fix Bush's screw ups and replace them with new prosperous things.

  • being helpful
  • being prompt
  • using my listening skills
  • trying to obtain perfect attendance

2. Learn how to write a complete sentence, use correct punctuation marks, and learn how to spell and identify the meanings of unknown words.

  • paying attention
  • asking questions when I don't understand something
  • reading when I get home and not 5 mins before class.
  • obtain three words a week from the dictionary

3. Last but not least learn how to write an essay that's more than 2 pages long

  • this is the teachers job!!! because I have no clue!!!!

The topic that I have chosen is: Should the death penalty be an option for certain crimes? or Should it be abolished in favor of life in prison without the possibility of parole?.....I choose this topic because the death penalty intrest me and I feel like this topic is a touchy situation.
